First Ammonia has awarded energy service provider Worley the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) contract for its green hydrogen-based facility in Victoria, the US.
Expected to be the first commercial-scale ammonia project to utilise solid-oxide electrolysers (SOEC), the plant will have an initial production capacity of 300 tonnes per day, which could potentially be expanded.
The plant will need to be designed for fluctuating operations, to match the availability of renewable energy and contribute to the stability of the local grid. Furthermore, the plant has a simple and modular design, lowering construction risk and minimising total project cost.
Australia’s Worley will likely complete the final FEED study by the end of Q1 2025 before the full project breaks ground later this year.
“We’re pleased to be partnering with a company that recognises the importance of building trust between infrastructure participants to successfully deliver projects that contribute to a more sustainable world,” explained Marc Ven Den Boom, Senior Vice-President of the Gulf Coast Operations at Worley.
Last December, Worley was chosen to undertake the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for ExxonMobil’s low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia facility, also in Texas.

Joel Moser, CEO at First Ammonia, added, “Clean ammonia plays a crucial role in reducing emissions across hard-to-abate sectors, and Worley’s expertise will be key to creating a future of flexible, decentralised, electric ammonia production.”
Topsoe will provide the SOEC modules for the project after it finalised a sales and service agreement with First Ammonia last October for the fabrication of the first 100MW of systems.
