Start-up unveils 25kW precious metal-free alkaline electrolyser with 74% efficiency

Swedish hydrogen electrolyser start-up HyMeth has unveiled a new 25kW precious metal-free alkaline system with up to 74% overall stack efficiency while also reducing costs, size and weight.

In 2023, the Malmo-based firm delivered a 5kW system, which achieved 67% efficiency, to Nilsson Energy (now Hydri) for testing in Gothenburg.

Now, however, HyMeth says the larger 25kW stack has achieved a 4-10% efficiency improvement, bringing its overall efficiency to between 70 and 74%.

The low-temperature, high-pressure alkaline electrolyser uses a non-precious alloy catalyst, which the company says will allow it to produce hydrogen at 25% less cost than existing alkaline systems.

Additionally, the second-generation system has seen a reduction in size and weight.

“These advancements are not just about improving efficiency – they represent our commitment to making hydrogen production more accessible, affordable and impactful on a global scale,” said HyMeth CEO, Mats Blacker.

The 25kW system is also set to be delivered to the company’s second customer to prove its viability in a real-world setting.

Precious metals such as platinum and iridium are used in electrolysers as catalysts due to their efficiency and durability. By replacing these with cheaper and more abundant materials, electrolyser CAPEX can be reduced, but stability, efficiency and durability challenges must be overcome.
