The Port of Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland, has introduced a green hydrogen shore demonstrator designed to supply clean energy to berthed vessels.
The UK Government-backed project integrates water treatment, waste heat utilisation and hydrogen production to power large tugboats operated by Targe Towing. However, the vessels will only use the hydrogen for shore power while tied up at the port, replacing the need for diesel auxiliary engines.
Effluent from a nearby wastewater treatment plant is processed using Waterhelm’s technology to produce reusable water. The water undergoes electrolysis via Logan Energy’s systems to generate green hydrogen.
Part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (CMDC4), the project is funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by Innovate UK.
They worked with Forth Ports, Targe Towing, Logan Energy, PlusZero and Waterhelm to deliver the initiative, which was demonstrated to the industry yesterday (March 13).
“This is a world first for Scotland – a Green Hydrogen Shore Power Demonstrator that uses clean, green hydrogen energy to reduce carbon emissions from vessels when docked in port,” said Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop.
Ali Abbassi Monjezi, Director at Waterwhelm, added, “The interconnectivity of wastewater treatment sites with hydrogen production plants can enable multiple synergistic gains.
“Importantly, it future-proofs water supply for hydrogen production at a time of declining water availability due to climate change and population growth.
“Through this project, we have demonstrated how this interconnectivity can be achieved using Waterwhelm’s technology for water supply to green hydrogen production at the Port of Leith,” Monjezi claimed.
