Port of Açu lands third major green ammonia project with Sempen reservation deal

The Port of Açu has signed a land reservation agreement with project developer Sempen, marking the third green ammonia project announced at the Brazilian port within the past year.

The new facility will reportedly have a capacity of one million tonnes of hydrogen-derived ammonia per year, with a final investment decision (FID) expected in 2027 or 2028 and the first green molecules produced in 2030.

“Sempen’s arrival positions us as a leader in hydrogen and green ammonia production projects in Brazil,” claimed Mauro Andrade, Executive Director of Business Development at Prumo Logística, the company which privately owns the port, alongside the Port of Antwerp-Bruges International.

Just last January, YamnaCo signed a land reservation agreement with the port operators, also for a one-million-tonne-per-year green ammonia project.

The hub is expected to require around 1.8GW of electrolysers to fulfil its targeted ammonia production output, and Yamna plans to take FID in 2027.

Additionally, Fuella secured the first land reservation contract at the Rio de Janeiro port last August. Fuella’s planned low-carbon hydrogen and derivatives hub has secured a “significant area” in the port.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding with Prumo, they expect to implement a 520MW ammonia plant, which will have the potential to produce 400,000 tonnes of hydrogen carrier per year.
