PNWHA selects AtkinsRéalis to support hydrogen hub

The Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association (PNWHA) has awarded an engineering contract to AtkinsRéalis to help develop its hydrogen hub in the US.

Under a Project Management Office (PMO) contract, AtkinsRéalis will administer all subreciptient agreements, provide project management oversight and facilitate required reporting to the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) on project status.

AtkinsRéalis are expected to manage the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub (PNWH2) contract from its newly completed Technology Centre in Richland, Washington.

Joe St. Julian, President at AtkinsRéalis, Nuclear, said, “Our exceptional low-carbon technology specialists and project personnel enable us to provide our industrial, transport and building sector clients with a trusted partner to guide them from project origination through commercial application to meet their needs in this ever-changing global energy market.”

In July (2024), the PNWH2 became the second US hydrogen hub to secure the first phase of funding from the DOE to officially launch the facility.

The DOE provided an initial $27.5m from an earmarked $1bn, which the PNWHA said it would use for planning, permitting and analysis to “ensure that the overall hub concept is technologically and financially viable.”

Whilst it has not been stated how many tonnes of hydrogen the hub will produce, its aim is to drive down electrolyser costs and hydrogen production, with an end-use focus on heavy-duty transportation, agriculture and industrial operations.

Commenting on the engineering contract, Joe McBrearty, Interim President at AtkinsRéalis US Nuclear said, “We possess an exceptional track record of success throughout the entire hydrogen value chain from electrolyser design and manufacturing to development, engineering, design, construction and commissioning of full facilities,” he said.

“It’s through this knowledge that we can confidently reduce our clients’ technology and economic risks along their Net Zero journey.”
