Norwegian Hydrogen takes FID on 25MW green hydrogen plant in Rjukan

Norwegian Hydrogen has taken a final investment decision (FID) on its 25MW green hydrogen plant in Rjukan, Norway.

The project, acquired from Aker Horizons earlier this year, includes a power purchase agreement (PPA) with local utility Tinn Energi to guarantee renewable electricity supply.

Nel will supply the 25MW alkaline electrolyser system, with Norwegian Hydrogen eyeing future scale-up potential.

While full operations are slated for 2027, the company has indicated that early-stage production could begin ahead of schedule.

The firm is targeting offtake agreements across the Nordics, aiming to supply green hydrogen to both existing and new customers in southern Norway and parts of Sweden on predictable, competitive terms, it said in a statement.

Norwegian Hydrogen currently supplies hydrogen to Stockholm-based GreenIron from its Hellesylt plant, supporting operations at the Sandviken refinery.

The company also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Germany’s Uniper last August for hydrogen offtake across the Nordics, with deliveries handled by Provaris.

Commenting on the FID, Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen, said, “This is an important milestone. The Rjukan facility will be important for both us and our customers, and we’re excited to get started.”
