Nord Steel awarded €1.4m contract to deliver hydrogen storage tanks to Lithuania

MT Group has awarded Nord Steel a €1.4m ($1.44) contract to manufacture and supply green hydrogen storage tanks for its Lithuanian hydrogen refuelling station, which is currently under development.

Set to be the first green hydrogen production and refuelling station in the Baltic States, the facility, located at the Port of Klaipéda, will also source a PEM electrolyser from partner IMI.

Nord Steel, which operates three steel fabrication units in Lithuania, will deliver a 40-bar green hydrogen buffer tank and two hydrogen storage tanks capable of withstanding 550 and 1000-bar pressures.

“We see the Klaipéda Port green hydrogen station project as an opportunity to set a benchmark for such facilities across the Baltic region,” explained Remigijus Kurgonas, CEO of Nord Steel.

“Our primary focus is ensuring the highest safety and quality standards,” the CEO added.

EPC contractor MT Group and Lithuania’s Klaipéda State Seaport Authority agreed to develop the €10.5m ($11.4m) project last October, with plans to eventually produce around 500kg of hydrogen per day for refuelling.

Algis Latakas, General Director of the Seaport Authority, claimed the initiative is an “important step” in the development of the port’s infrastructure towards a more “modern, cleaner and innovative transport and industrial ecosystem.”

Latakas continued, “This project demonstrates Lithuania’s industrial capability not only to adapt to global changes but also to actively participate in shaping them, demonstrating a high level of competence, professionalism and a responsible approach.”

Additionally, MT Group’s CEO, Mindaugas Zakaras, commented, “We believe this project will not only act as a catalyst for the development of green hydrogen technologies in Lithuania but will also make a significant contribution to the region’s sustainable energy breakthrough.”
