Morocco approves $32.7bn for six hydrogen-based projects

The Moroccan Government has approved six hydrogen-based projects worth $32.7bn located in the country’s southern regions.

The UAE’s Taqa and Moeve (formerly Cepsa) will focus on green ammonia and synthetic fuel production. Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power aims to develop green steel, while Moroccan firm Nareva will work on green ammonia, industrial fuel, and green steel.

A consortium led by US-based Ortus, Spain’s Acciona, and German wind turbine manufacturer Nordex – operating under the ORNX consortium – will also produce green ammonia. Similarly, UEG and China Three Gorges will develop green ammonia production, forming the sixth project.

While specific details on the projects are limited, the Moroccan Government has offered each of the initiatives up to 30,000 hectares of land, as long as preliminary agreements are signed.

According to local reports, the selection process remains open to new investors interested in developing hydrogen projects in Morocco.

The news comes after TE H2 signed a Preliminary Contract for Land Reservation with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and A.P. Møller Capital for a 1GW hydrogen production project in Morocco last October.

In collaboration with the Danish firms, the TotalEnergies and EREN Group joint venture (TE H2) plans to initiate pre-Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) studies for the Chbika project, which aims to produce 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year for the European market.

As part of its national hydrogen strategy, Morocco anticipates a demand of up to 30 TWh by 2030 and 307 TWh by 2050, requiring approximately 2 GW of renewable energy to support production.

Meanwhile, a report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) last year revealed that the UAE, Oman, and Morocco could surpass their projected hydrogen production capacities for 2030.

Along with Egypt and Iraq, these countries are expected to account for 44% of North Africa’s total hydrogen output, reinforcing the region’s growing role in the global hydrogen economy.
