Mabanaft plans two-tonne-per-day hydrogen refuelling station in Lübeck

German energy firm Mabanaft has announced plans for a Hypion-designed two-tonne-per-day hydrogen refuelling station in Lübeck.

Situated near the A1 and A20 motorways where Mabanaft already operates a diesel refuelling station, the facility will be designed to refuel up to 50 hydrogen-powered heavy-goods vehicles (HGVs) each day.

Mabanaft has submitted construction applications for the facility and expects work with Hypion to begin in the second half of the year, intending to bring it online by the end of 2025.

The station’s development has been backed via a €5.1m ($5.5m) grant awarded under the German Government’s Climate Friendly Commercial Vehicles and Infrastructure programme.

Mabanaft has already built two hydrogen refuelling stations in Sweden through its subsidiary PS Energi and has secured funding for three additional sites.

The company has said Staack Pooltankstellen will operate the Lübeck station within its tankpool24 network, which comprises over 2,000 stations across Europe.

“We’re convinced of the multi-fuel approach, and the idea that different fuel solutions can accelerate the energy transition,” explained Volker Ebeling, Senior Vice-President New Energy, Supply and Infrastructure at Mabanaft.

However, Germany’s hydrogen refuelling network has faced a bumpy road over the past year.

In 2024, a tube trailer fire exposed the nation’s hydrogen refuelling supply chain, forcing hydrogen refuelling stations to shut throughout Germany.

To kick off 2025, H2Mobility also revealed it would close 11 small 700-bar refuelling stations in the country, with a further 11 to follow by the end of Q2.
