Lifte H2 and Resato to build hydrogen refuelling station in Kreis Düren to support bus fleet expansion

Lifte H2 and Resato Hydrogen Technology will build a hydrogen refuelling station in Kreis Düren, Germany, capable of providing 1.2 tonnes of fuel per day.

The two company-consortium was selected by Beteiligungsgesellschaft Kreis Düren, a subsidiary of the district of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The facility will be developed in two phases, initially supporting 23 hydrogen-powered buses before expanding to accommodate an additional 29. During the first phase, buses are expected to refuel in under four hours, with the facility ultimately reaching a full capacity of 1.2 tonnes.

Germany’s Lifte H2 will manage the project, design the station and oversee commissioning, while Dutch firm Resato will provide the refuelling infrastructure equipment and short-term maintenance services.

Whilst the companies have not revealed when the initial phase will start up, the second is expected to be completed by Q3 2027.

By combining expertise, Paul Karzel, Managing Director of Lifte H2, said they’re “implementing a flexible system that ensures dependable operations for the current fleet while accommodating future growth.

“The station’s architecture incorporates parallel refuelling capabilities and advanced control systems that will reliably serve the region’s expanding hydrogen mobility needs,” Karzel added.

In 2023, H2 Mobility opened a 350 and 700 bar refuelling station in Düren, which is currently still operational, offering a hydrogen price of €16.05/kg.

The recent announcement aligns with Resato’s goal of producing 1,000 hydrogen refuelling stations by 2030. Last January, the European Investment Bank (EIB) awarded the company a €25m ($25.5m) loan to expand its production capacity.
