Latvenergo partners with H2Pro to explore 5MW hydrogen project using decoupled electrolysis

Latvenergo and H2Pro will potentially deploy a 5MW hydrogen production project in Latvia using decoupled electrolysis technology.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Israel’s H2Pro will work with Latvia’s national electricity company, Latvenergo, to explore the feasibility of deploying its 5MW electrolyser in the latter’s energy infrastructure.

Together, they aim to integrate Latvia’s solar and wind resources to power with H2Pro’s electrolysis technology.

Latvian Minister of Economy, Viktors Valainis, said he hopes to “keep developing the energy and other sectors of economy in a mutually beneficial way between Latvia and Israel.”

After signing the MOU in Tel Aviv, Israel, Tzahi Rodrig, CEO of H2Pro, claimed that Latvenergo presents an “excellent environment for demonstrating the unique advantages of [its] technology.”

The CEO continued, “Latvenergo’s diverse renewable energy portfolio provides the perfect testing ground to validate our electrolyser’s high efficiency across multiple load scenarios, as well as our technology’s seamless integration with renewables thanks to the hyper-flexibility of our system.”

Decoupled electrolysis technology separates the conventional electrolysis process into distinct steps, which reportedly allows for greater flexibility, efficiency and cost reduction compared to traditional techniques.

Latvenergo CEO, Dr. Martins Cakste emphasised the importance of EU funding in the green hydrogen transition but stressed the need for projects to be economically viable.

“That’s why we are particularly interested in breakthrough technologies like H2Pro’s decoupled electrolysis, which can reduce capital costs while maintaining high efficiency,” he explained.
