Hynamics and ESB join forces for green hydrogen plant at Port of Barry

Hynamics’ is strengthening its clean hydrogen plans for the Port of Barry, as the EDF subsidiary partners with ESB on developing a green hydrogen plant at the Welsh port.

The firm said that alongside the Irish state-owned electricity utility, it will look to formalise contractual agreements for the development of Barry Hydrogen Project by the end of 2024, with hopes of securing financing.

It comes after ABP and px Group launched plans for a Clean Growth Hub at the port to transform over 100 acres of development land to host rare earth processing, battery manufacturing, clean tech manufacturing and more.

12 months ago, Hynamics signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ABP to evaluate the development of low-carbon hydrogen production and distribution in Barry.

At the time Hynamics and ABP said they would explore opportunities to replace natural gas in industry with low-carbon hydrogen, as well as the energy carrier’s use in port operations and transport.

Pierre de Raphélis-Soissan, CEO of Hynamics UK, said the MoU with ESB would set the stage to drive “impactful results and create sustainable value for our customers and communities in the Barry Port Region.”

“We believe that green hydrogen will play a pivotal role in achieving Net Zero, and this MoU with Hynamics comes at an exciting time in the UK’s acceleration towards a decarbonised energy system,” said Aodhán McAleer, Hydrogen, Storage & Power-to-X Manager at ESB Generation and Trading.
