GCH plans 4,000 tonne hydrogen facility at Chapelcross

Green Cat Hydrogen (GCH) has proposed plans to build a hydrogen production facility in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, capable of producing up to 4,000 tonnes per year.

Subject to planning approval, the facility will be located at the Chapelcross Energy Transition Zone near Creca. Work is underway on the preliminary engineering and environmental studies for the project.

The produced hydrogen is expected to decarbonise numerous industries in the region, including food and drink producers, other manufacturers and public sector operations. The facility will also be connected to new-build solar assets for renewable generation.

Last year, the UK Government unveiled plans to convert the former nuclear site at Chapelcross to a green energy hub. GCH’s project will be located adjacent to the site.

Before GCH submits a planning application however, it will hold two public consultation events, allowing the public to view the plans, learn more about the project and provide feedback.

The first consultation will take place on April 1, 2025, and the second will be announced in due course.

“The public consultation is an important part of the project development process,” Gavin Catto, CEO at GCH said.

“The current project at Chapelcross is just the first phase of what we hope will develop into a significant partnership for Green Cat Hydrogen and our counterparts.

“The project represents a significant contribution to the transformation of Chapelcross into a major hub for this exciting new technology.”

Jane Morrison-Ross, Chief Executive at South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE), one of the companies leading the Chapelcross initiative, praised GCH’s proposals. Morrison-Ross claimed that they highlight that the south is the “perfect place to invest and do business.”

The Chief Executive added, “We know that Chapelcross is perfectly placed in the middle of the UK, and its history and future reflect the importance of innovation in energy production.”
