European Energy powers up first green hydrogen plant in Denmark

Denmark’s European Energy has inaugurated its first green hydrogen production facility in Måde, near Esbjerg.

Having completed construction in June, the facility is now operational with the first of three electrolysers producing hydrogen.

Supplied by floating offshore wind, hydrogen and carbon capture firm Stiesdal, the electrolyser capacity is expected to be expanded to 12MW by adding two more systems in 2025.

Hydrogen produced by the Måde plant is planned to be supplied to Port Esbjer and a “world-leading company in industrial gases,” with excess heat generated from the facility set to be used for district heating.

“With the start of operations at Måde, we can deliver green hydrogen to the market,” said European Energy CEO, Knud Erik Andersen. “This achievement demonstrates that the transformation of our energy systems is not just a distant – vision – it’s happening right now.”

Coming as the solar firm’s first venture into green hydrogen, European Energy hopes the suite will provide valuable insights into plant operations.

“This facility is just the beginning,” said Emil Vikjær-Andersen, Executive Vice-President and Head of Power-to-X at European Energy. “Through the many learnings we have captured by designing, constructing and commissioning the plant, we will be able to reduce cost and time for future plants while improving project economics.”

The firm is already commissioning its green methanol plant in Kassø, Denmark, where it expects to start production this year.
