Enapter’s Chinese joint venture (JV) with Wolong Group has produced its first 1MW AEM electrolyser.
Wolong Enapter Hydrogen Technologies presented the 1MW system as the JV marks the start of the series production of the Nexus electrolyser for the Chinese market.
Produced in Shangyu, China, Enapter CEO, Dr. Jürgen Laakmann, said the achievement marked an “important step” in the firm’s expansion strategy.
“Thanks to our JV with Wolong, we are ideally positioned to capitalise on the growing market potential in the Chinese green hydrogen sector and continue to drive Enapter’s dynamic growth,” he said.
Wolong Chairman, Pang Xinyuan, said, “With Enapter, we have a strong partner at our side to further advance the establishment of green hydrogen in China.
“In a very short space of time, we were able to jointly develop this megawatt electrolyser and convince the first potential customers in China of Enapter’s AEM technology.”
Launched in February, the JV, in which Enapter holds a 49% stake, acquired AEM stacks from Enapter, with plans to produce electrolyser systems in China for the domestic market.
China has been accelerating ahead of other regions in its green hydrogen ambitions.
The Hydrogen Council’s Hydrogen Insights 2024 report said that of the 4.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of production capacity at final investment decision (FID) until 230, 30% is in China alone – where the vast majority is green.
Of the 26GW of electrolysis capacity in FID, over 10GW are in China, while the nation already has 1.15GW of capacity already operational – with 650MW added since October 2023.
“Deployments in China continue to outpace the rest of the world, as committed electrolyser volumes previously grew from 40% to about 55% of global capacity, and now reached 65%,” the report found.
