Anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyser technology provider Enapter has expanded its product range by integrating lithium-ion batteries from its joint venture partner Wolong Energy Storage Systems (ESS).
Supplied by Chinese partner Zhejiang Wolong Energy Storage System, the batteries will range from 150kW to several megawatts in capacity. They will work in conjunction with Enapter’s multicore electrolysers.
In an online statement, Enapter said the partnership will “enable companies to make even better use of the high potential of renewables, reduce production and storage costs for green energy and maximise output in the production of hydrogen.”
The batteries will help keep hydrogen production steady by storing extra energy when solar and wind power generate more than needed. When renewable energy is low, the stored energy is used to keep the electrolyser running efficiently.
This will ensure a reliable energy supply, reduce waste and allow hydrogen to be produced even when renewable sources aren’t actively generating power.
“With the possibility of using our electrolyser in combination with batteries, we are creating the best of both worlds: Constant green hydrogen production even when renewable energy sources are not available,” explained Dr. Jürgen Laakmann, CEO of Enapter.
“By storing electricity in the batteries, the running time of the systems is significantly extended and costs are reduced. Our innovative energy management system ensures the perfect balance and the right interaction between electrolyser and battery.”
