Eneos Corporation has awarded Chiyoda Corporation an equipment, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for a direct methylcyclohexane electrosynthesis (MCH) plant in Brisbane, Australia.
Built upon a previous demonstration, the project aims to identify obstacles for future implementation of the hydrogen carrier MCH. It has been equipped with a large-scale direct MCH electrolyser developed by the Japanese oil firm.
Construction of the green hydrogen facility is expected to begin this year, ahead of the first MCH production next year. Last December, Eneos announced plans for the AUD $200m ($129.9m) facility, which they anticipate to produce 680kg of hydrogen per day.
H2 View understands that a “portion” of the hydrogen carrier will be shipped to Japan following the start of production.
The demonstration plant and follow-up project were conducted as part of Green Innovation Fund Projects, which were commissioned by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO) to establish a large-scale hydrogen supply chain and develop direct MCH electrosynthesis technology.
As an integrated engineering company, Chiyoda said in an online statement it’s “committed to the EPC business and to advancing innovative technology, as we continue contributing to the development of sustainable society.”
The previous demonstration plant integrated a 150kW electrolyser with a 250kW solar power system to produce green MCH from renewable energy.
In 2023, Eneos ran an eight-month demonstration trial with the target of producing approximately two to three tonnes of hydrogen.
The produced product was transported from Australia to Japan for hydrogen extraction at Eneos’ Central Technical Research Laboratory.
