Charbone Hydrogen Corporation and ABB will collaborate on the development of up to 15 green hydrogen production facilities in North America, beginning with its flagship project in Québec, Canada.
Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the two energy companies have said they will jointly develop the projects over the next five years. Acting as a blueprint, the flagship Sorel-Tracy facility will be connected to the Hydro-Québec grid by the end of Q2 2025, using hydroelectricity to power two electrolysers.
In Phase 1 of the Sorel-Tracy project, Charbone expects to produce approximately 400kg of hydrogen. While details are thin and the size of future projects hasn’t been confirmed, they could follow a similar scale.
In addition to the Québec plant, the company will launch a production facility in the greater Detroit area, a key manufacturing hub for major automotive companies in its target market.
ABB will lead the design, engineering, fabrication, testing and supply of modular and standard electrical substations for the interconnection between production facilities and local utilities.
The Swiss firm will also support Charbone in standardising basic engineering for systems and components across its project portfolio to “increase energy efficiency and reliability.”
Furthermore, ABB may operate as the main automation, electrification and telecom contractor in the future, depending on project requirements.
“With the Sorel-Tracy project moving quickly to on-site activities, and the capabilities of plug and play modular approach to get production starting in a minimal number of weeks, Charbone will support the decarbonisation of industry,” explained Daniel Charette, Chief Operating Officer of Charbone Hydrogen.
