Nel’s former refuelling business Cavendish Hydrogen and Swiss-based Hoerbiger plan to “revolutionise” refuelling stations by integrating compression and fuelling solutions.
In 2023, the firms signed technical and commercial collaboration agreements to develop a compact, high-performance compressor “tailored’ to hydrogen industry demands.
The new Hoerbiger compressor, which forms part of its hydrogen compressor package (HCP 500), is set to be integrated into Cavendish’s refuelling platform.
Said to offer “precise and flexible” flow rate controls to improve efficiency, the compressor is designed for heavy-duty refuelling and trailer filling facilities, with a mass flow rate of 250kg/h at 25bar, and discharge pressures of up to 500 bar.
Now, Cavendish has said it will supply modular fuelling station equipment, including additional compressors for pressures up to 950 bar if needed, to meet a range of use cases.
As a first step of the collaboration, Cavendish will set up a test station in Herning, Denmark during “2024-2025.”
Hoerbiger’s Head of Hydrogen Mobility, Jürgen Brenner, said the combination of the technologies will “usher in a new era of safety in the medium- and heavy-duty fuelling station and trailer filling sector.”
Robert Borin, Cavendish CEO, added, “By integrating the revolutionary HCP 500 into our innovative fuelling station, we will be able to cater to the needs of the growing hydrogen truck market by offering our customers a safe, reliable and modular station with one the highest station capacities,”
The HCP 500 has already been selected for use by H2Mobility for its station in Düsseldorf-Hoerwig, which the station developer says will be Europe’s “most powerful.”

Cavendish was formally established this summer, when it spun out of Nel ASA, to be listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange, allowing Cavendish and Nel to focus purely on refuelling and electrolysis respectively.
