Blue Economy has inaugurated Tasmania’s “first” green hydrogen production plant, which is reported to have a capacity of up to 262kg of green hydrogen per day.
Located at BOC Australia’s Lutana site, the facility features an electrolyser attached to a microgrid system capable of recreating the inputs from renewable energy and mirror loads from the industry to stimulate real-life applications.
Optimal Group delivered a 700kW PEM electrolyser and it was installed and commissioned by the company in collaboration with BOC and Pitt & Sherry.
Blue Economy has stated that the site’s daily capacity is sufficient to power two 22-metre hydrogen fuel cell-powered passenger ferries. The company aims to produce commercial-scale hydrogen for industrial and transport applications.
Nick Duigan, the Australian Minister for Energy and Renewables, said the electrolyser provided is one of the nation’s largest, “generating up to 100% renewable hydrogen.”
Duigan added, “Our government has a goal to reach 200% renewable electricity generation by 2040, and this facility is the start of building a sustainable green hydrogen sector to power our state for generations to come.”
The project has been undertaken under the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) programme in conjunction with BOC Australia, the Tasmanian Government, Pitt & Sherry, Optimal Group, the University of Tasmania, Griffith University and Hydro Tasmania.
Dr. John Whittington, Blue Economy CRC CEO, said, “The production of green hydrogen begins at commercial scale, but what we’re really looking to produce is answers to some of our most important questions around hydrogen and its uses.”
