Blastr, Knauf Interfer look to deliver hydrogen-based steel to Central Europe

Blastr Green Steel is exploring the potential to supply 100,000 tonnes of hydrogen-based steel per year to Central Europe with metals processing firm Knauf Interfer.

Having entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the pair plan to develop a low-carbon dioxide (CO2) steel supply network, centred around Knauf Interfer’s hub in Duisburg, Germany.

Blastr has plans to build a €4bn green steel plant with an integrated hydrogen production facility in Inkoo, Finland. The firm also wants to set up a green pellets plant in the UK.

Using hydrogen to produce direct reduced iron (DRI), the company expects to be able to reduce CO2 emissions by 90% compared to traditional steel production.

In October last year, Blastr signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Inkoo Shipping to develop its harbour for handling Blastr’s sea cargo.

Expecting to produce 2.5 million tonnes of low-CO2 steel of green pellets, Blastr is hoping to use Knauf Interfer’s hub as a logistics centre to get its green steel products to Central European customers.

Mark Bula, Blastr CEO, said the collaboration with Knauf Interfer was an important step towards showcasing the Norwegian company’s business model.

“Together, we will create a more efficient green steel value chain which delivers tangible climate change mitigation combined with a resilient regional supply chain,” he stressed.

Knauf Interfer’s Chief Operating Officier (COO), Domenico Marino, added, “This collaboration is a major step towards meeting increased demand for green steel through sustainable solutions across the supply chain.”
