Blackburn College has become “the first” UK institution to pilot a Level 2 Hydrogen Qualification.
The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) awarded the qualification last month (September), after they assessed the delivery of the course and evaluated the safety measures that the college had implemented, which included sensors and a ventilation system.
The college is also developing safety standards for training personnel for electric vehicle (EV) qualifications, to ensure their students are prepared for all future automotive technology.
“This is fantastic news as it keeps our curriculum ahead of industry trends, giving students hands-on experience with the latest advancements in hydrogen and EV technology,” explained Michael Yerbury, Hydrogen Technical Trainer at HEAT at Blackburn College.
“Big names like BMW and Hyundai are working on hydrogen innovations, and with new releases expected in the next year or two, it’s really important for our students to be comfortable with clean energy systems.”
Last month, BMW announced it would launch its first series production hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) as part of a partnership with Toyota Motor Corporation. By 2028, they are expected to be fully integrated into BMW’s portfolio.

In February (2024), seven low-carbon hydrogen production projects for use in transport and industry were selected to receive over £21m ($26.6m) from the UK Government.
The projects are expected to boost the UK’s hydrogen production capacity by 800MW and have been slated to deliver hydrogen to pharmaceutical and automotive companies.
