Air Liquide and Shenergy have inaugurated what they claim is China’s first 300-bar Type II hydrogen filling centre.
Located at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park (SCIP), the Shanghai Hydrogen Energy Supply Basin (Alshsn) has been backed with $13.8m in investment to ensure its development.
With an initial filling capacity of 12 tonnes per day, the station will be capable of supplying up to 12 hydrogen refuelling stations, supporting the deployment of medium- and heavy-duty hydrogen-powered trucks.
Air Liquide stated that the 300-bar Type II trailers used will allow for the delivery of 60% more hydrogen per trip and cut transport emissions compared to 200-bar alternatives.
The centre will provide low-carbon hydrogen produced through a CO2 recycling process at SCIP, with Air Liquide sourcing the biomethane from Shenergy for production.
“Through utilising abundant industrial byproduct resources, we will be able to deliver low-carbon hydrogen to the local market, to make mobility much cleaner,” Rui Coelho, CEO at Air Liquide China, said.
The development comes as part of Shanghai’s goal to reach peak carbon emissions by 2025, five years ahead of China’s national target.
As of February 2025, around 5,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and 18 hydrogen refuelling stations have reportedly been deployed in Shanghai.
