Accelera to supply 100MW electrolyser to bp’s German green hydrogen plant

Cummins’ clean tech arm, Accelera, has revealed that it will supply bp’s green hydrogen plant in Lingen, Germany, with a 100MW PEM electrolyser system.

The project, which reached final investment decision (FID) in December, will produce up to 11,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year for use in bp’s refining processes.

Accelera has said it will provide 20 of its 5MW PEM HyLYZER-1000 electrolyser units for the plant – making it the largest system assembled by the firm to date.

The units will be manufactured at the company’s new 500MW plant in Guadalajara, Spain, which opened last October.

bp and Accelera expect to fully commission the project in 2027, despite the British oil major today (February 11) revealing plans to axe its clean energy targets and double down on oil production amid plummeting profits.

The Lingen project had secured a portion of €4.3bn ($4.44bn) distributed to 23 hydrogen projects through the EU’s Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) Hy2Infra scheme.

The announcement also comes at a crucial point for Accelera, after its parent firm Cummins last week revealed the clean tech arm had taken a $316m hit in restructuring costs amid slowing demand.

Despite remaining quiet on what elements of Accelera had been impacted, Cummins said it would consolidate manufacturing efforts, prioritise the strongest business areas, rely on more partners and reduce spending in certain technologies.

Cummins CEO, Jennifier Rumsey, had told investors, “We’re continuing to invest but pace investment in electrolysers as we’ve seen some slowing in customer demand and uncertainty around incentives there.”

However, Andreas Lippert, Accelera’s head of electrolysers, said the bp project was a “significant milestone” for the firm.

“Partnering on this 100MW system with an industry leader like bp underscores our ability to deliver innovative, industrial-scale solutions that move the needle on our customers’ decarbonisation goals and continue to grow the green hydrogen economy,” he stressed.
