1.1GW electrolyser in China to begin producing hydrogen next year

Jiangsu Xingran Technology’s 1.1GW PEM electrolyser plant is set to enter full-scale operations in January 2025.

Expected to complete construction by the end of the month (October), the 250-metre solution packages four single-cells into containerised hydrogen generation units.

Each unit is said to have a “production capacity of 1,000 standard cubic metres”– making the Changzhou production base “the largest” in China, with a 1.1GW output.

The Changzhou facility features advanced intelligent and automated manufacturing systems and nearly 100 ultrasonic spray coaters and five-in-one hot press systems. This is anticipated to “drive down costs due to the dual approach of technological innovation and large-scale cost reductions.”

H2 View understands that this has allowed Jiangsu Xingran to lower the manufacturing costs of its PEM electrolysers by 40%.

China’s role in the hydrogen industry has grown significantly over the past few years, offering electrolysers and key components at much lower prices.

Last week (September 27), the European Commission published its terms and conditions for the second European Hydrogen Bank (EHB) auction, revealing electrolyser sourcing limits on China for hydrogen developers.

The European Commission was warned there’s a significant risk to the EU’s security of supply due to increasing dependency on Chinese electrolyser imports.

Speaking to H2 View earlier this year, Ethan Hugh, Global Marketing Director at Chinese firm Hygreen Energy, said that he expects China’s non-domestic market to overtake demand in the country by next year.
