Xcel Energy has chosen Worley, and its consulting business Advisian, to undertake an assessment of its US natural gas pipeline system to determine the feasibility of injecting and blending hydrogen.
With 36,000 miles (57,936km) of distribution pipeline and 2,200 miles (3,540km) of transmission pipeline, serving 2.1 million customers, the injection and blending of hydrogen into Xcel’s natural gas system is hoped to help the company meet its low-carbon objectives.
The feasibility study will evaluate what percentage of injected hydrogen can be accommodate in the system and what upgrades are necessary to optimise the blended quantity.
