Work has started on a hydrogen refuelling station at Teesside International Airport in England’s Northeast after planning permission was granted.
Supported by £8m ($10.1m) of UK Government funding, the station will form part of the Tees Valley Hydrogen Transport Hub, which aims to bolster hydrogen production and use across mobility applications.
Construction is expected to be completed this spring before installation and commissioning. The Element 2-built station is planned to support hydrogen trucks, vans and cars, as well as any airport vehicle trials.

As part of the hub funding, ULEMCo planned to develop hydrogen-powered airport ground vehicles such as aeroplane tow trucks and runway sweepers.
Element 2 also had plans to build three other stations as part of the hub.

Tees Valley Mayor, Ben Houchen, said, “We were first out of the blocks when it came to backing hydrogen – and it’s great to see the groundwork is now paying off with action and results.
“We want to continue to stretch our lead at the forefront of the cleaner, healthier and safer industries of tomorrow and having this station at our airport is a huge marker laid down to the rest of the country.”
