Waaree Group breaks ground on alkaline electrolyser facility in India

Waaree Group has broken ground on its alkaline electrolyser manufacturing plant in Gujarat, India, which will have an initial production capacity of 300MW.

Reportedly, the electrolysers have been designed to consume less power and operate with flexibility, while maintaining high performance and requiring minimal maintenance.

Waaree secured a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) for 300MW of electrolyser manufacturing capacity and 90,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen production under the Government of India’s Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) scheme.

H2 View understands that the Indian firm’s electrolysers are likely to be distributed to members of the steel, refining, transportation, fertiliser, chemicals, food and power generation industries.

Last year, the solar panel manufacturer approved $63.5m of investment into its green hydrogen business supported by government subsidies, secured for both the electrolysers and hydrogen production.

“At Waaree, we’re committed to leading the nation’s clean energy revolution,” explained Anuj Sharma, CEO at Waaree Clean Energy Solutions. “Through the development of this advanced facility, we aim to empower industries, create new jobs and contribute to a sustainable, greener future.”

India has recently ramped up its green hydrogen push, with NTPC Green Energy unveiling plans for a $22.3bn hydrogen hub capable of producing 1,500 tonnes of green fuel annually.

Splitwaters, the US-based electrolyser and EPC firm, echoed this momentum, telling H2 View that India has emerged as a key player in the hydrogen industry over the past year. “Their policy is very strong, and the incentives they offer are among the world’s best right now,” the company’s CEO, Deepak Bawa said.

India Energy Week 2025 opens with bold hydrogen outlook

India Energy Week (IEW) 2025 has opened its doors in New Delhi and the major exhibition, billed as the second largest energy event globally, heard bold forecasts for green hydrogen at the opening ceremony.

The India National Hydrogen Mission has set a target of 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030 but H.E. Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, said he thinks India “will do much better than that.”

“I believe there will be such a shift to green hydrogen and work is going on at a frantic pace. We’ve already demonstrated that the cost of solar energy can be brought down from 25 cents to 3 cents – all you need is an electrolyser,” he said.

Minister Puri said while the “primary focus” remains on increasing the adoption of biofuels, renewables and hydrogen, he accepted oil and gas will continue to play a pivotal role in stabilising grids, and developing industrial hydrogen and energy storage.
