Volvo-Westport clean fuel engine JV launches as Cespira

HPDI Technology has officially launched into the hydrogen market as Cespira, as it begins to make its technology available on a global scale.

The Volvo Group and Westport Fuel Systems joint venture (JV) wants to advance the use of its high-pressure direct injection (HPDI) fuel systems in the mobility sector.

Dan Sceli, CEO of Cespira, explained the decision to launch as Cespira. “The name – combining ‘espira,’ meaning breathe out, with ‘C’ for clean – perfectly embodies our mission and vision.

“The turquoise symbol above the ‘i’ is more than just a design choice; it represents our collaboration with Volvo Group and Westport, the integration of established technologies with cutting-edge clean fuel solutions, and the molecular structure of hydrogen, which is central to our mission.

“Moreover, the symbol reflects our ambition to partner with multiple OEMs, expanding the reach and impact of the JV. Collaboration is at the core of everything we do, and it’s through these partnerships that we will lead the way toward true decarbonisation.”

Both Volvo and Westport announced the establishment of their JV in 2024, representing a 45% interest for Volvo for approximately $28m, plus up to an additional $45m as an earn-out.

Cespira’s HPDI tech can be integrated into existing internal combustion engine (ICE) architectures, offering CO2 reductions for long-haul trucking and demanding off-road uses.

Lars Stenqvist, CTO at Volvo, explained, “The HDPI technology is important for decarbonisation, offering immediate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while utilising existing ICE.

“This can be achieved today with biogas and natural gas, and we foresee exciting possibilities with hydrogen. With Cespira, we are well-positioned to continue leading the industry toward a more sustainable future and we look forward to seeing other OEMs explore this technology.”
