Vireon Hydrogen has been granted €3.8m ($3.99m) to build a 5MW electrolyser facility in Finland after being named the country’s first voluntary distributor of green hydrogen.
The electrolyser will form part of the Norwegian Hydrogen subsidiary’s Jyväskylä Hydrogen Hub, which plans to build a hydrogen refuelling station for heavy-duty transport in its first phase.
Expected to be operational by 2025, five hydrogen-powered buses will be the first vehicles to use the new station.
The new funding from Business Finland will support the hub’s second phase where the electrolyser will be installed at the refuelling station.
Expected to produce around 700 tonnes of hydrogen annually, Vireon said groundwork will start “immediately” to speed up implementation.
“This grant will allow us to complete the green hydrogen value chain in Jyväskylä,” said Per Øyvind Voie, Vireon’s Managing Director.
The Finnish Energy Authority has confirmed the company as the first voluntary distributor of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs) under Finland’s distribution obligation.
For electrolytic hydrogen to be designated as an RFNBO, producers must comply with stringent additionality, geographic, and hourly matching criteria with renewable energy assets, in line with EU rules.
Finland’s distribution obligation aims to promote the use of renewable energy in transport. From January 1, 2025, renewable fuels must meet 16.5% of transport fuels, with specific future quotas for RFNBOs starting in 2028.
