Vireon starts Finnish hydrogen infrastructure roll-out with station in Jyväskylä

Vireon has revealed plans to build the first of four large-scale hydrogen refuelling stations in Finland.

The Norwegian Hydrogen subsidiary said it would construct the station in Jyväskylä, the regional capital of Central Finland.

Primarily focused on servicing heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and buses, the site will also have the capacity to meet demand from light vehicles.

The company has not revealed the station’s capacity or hydrogen supply scheme.

Coming as the first of four stations under a collaboration with the Central Finland Mobility Foundation (CEFMOF) and the City of Jyväskylä, Vireon Managing Director, Per Øyvind Voie, said it would support the city’s climate goals and the use of hydrogen in mobility in Finland.

“Jyväskylä’s central location, combined with strong collaboration with CEFMOF and the City, makes it an ideal starting point for our hydrogen infrastructure,” he said.

“This project not only strengthens Jyväskylä’s role in the transition to renewable energy but also paves the way for hydrogen-powered transportation across Finland, as more stations will follow soon.”

The plans come ahead of a pilot trial of five Caetano H2 City Gold buses, which are set to take to Jyväskylä’s streets in 2025.

Jyväskylä Mayor, Timo Koivisto, said, “The opening of our first green hydrogen refuelling station and the launch of the hydrogen bus pilot are excellent starts for building a green hydrogen ecosystem in Jyväskylä.”

Launched last March, Vireon entered the market with plans to become the “largest” hydrogen refuelling station operator for heavy transport in the Nordics.
