VINSSEN begins construction of hydrogen-powered leisure boat

VINSSEN has commenced construction on its hydrogen-powered boat, featuring an advanced 600kW propulsion system that combines fuel cells with battery technology.

The South Korean firm began building the hull for the 17.4m boat on October 8, after its design was approved by the Korea Marine Traffic Safety Authority (KOMSA).

The project is being developed in collaboration with JNTP, KOMERI and KITECH. JNTP will provide technical and regulatory support, KOMERI will conduct a hull stability assessment and a hydrogen fuel cell system performance evaluation, whilst KITECH will share hull welding technology and quality management expertise.

In additional to the boat, VINSSEN will install a moorage facility in Yeongam-gun and set up and operate a specialised mobile package-type hydrogen charging station that includes differentiated monitoring technology.

The hydrogen-powered vessel is expected to carry up to 10 passengers and boast a maximum speed of 20 knots.

“This R&D project is essential to eventually achieving carbon neutrality and improving the maritime environment in Korea,” explained Chil Han Lee, VINSSEN CEO.

“Through this project, we will continue to accelerate safe and efficient eco-friendly maritime mobility technologies.”

In June (2024), VINSSEN secured project-based approval from Bureau Veritas (BV) for its hydrogen fuel cell system designed for use onboard maritime applications.
