Veer to develop 100-metre wind and hydrogen-powered container ships

Veer has chosen Fosen Shipyard to help develop, construct, sell and purchase two firm units of 100m-long wind-powered and hydrogen-assisted container vessels.

Under a Letter of Intent (LOI), the two companies expect to deploy the “first” clean container ship to cross an ocean. Veer has also partnered with Bernhard Schutle Ship Management and engaged with FutureShips ship brokerage, and is in discussions with multiple charterers to enable clean liner services in 2027.

The container ship will encompass hydrogen fuel cells and DynaRig sails. H2 View understands that Veer’s Design N°1 design was defined as “absolute zero emissions” by the IMO, and has received complete approval in principle from the American Bureau of Shipping and selected by the European Maritime Safety Agency for studies.

Costing around €41m ($44m), each ship’s primary propulsion can travel at 18 knots, up to 10,400 miles, utilising the DynaRig sails. Its secondary propulsion system, powered by hydrogen fuel cells, will have a speed of 11 knots and a range of 1,200 miles.
