Vale and GreenIron partner to build hydrogen-based iron ore supply chain

Vale and GreenIron will collaborate to establish an iron ore supply chain through a Brazilian direct reduction facility, advancing green hydrogen-based iron production for European markets.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the two companies will focus on the supply of Vale’s iron ore agglomerates to GreenIron’s commercial operations in Sandviken, Sweden, where hydrogen is being used to produce iron.

Through a feasibility study, they will explore a suitable site for the Brazilian project, considering renewable energy and resource supply options.

H2 View understands that GreenIron’s technology is flexible in terms of feedstock options and capacity tailored to clients, reportedly delivering lower costs and compatibility with the use of green hydrogen.

The commercial operations at Sandviken are being commissioned and scale-up is expected for 2025.

“This agreement brings together Vale’s superior product portfolio, Brazil’s competitive advantage on green hydrogen and GreenIron’s expertise in sustainable iron production to provide low-carbon solutions for the mining and metals industry,” explained Rogério Nogueira, EVP of Commercial and New Business at Vale.

“We are focused on helping our clients achieve their decarbonisation targets and also fostering Brazil’s new industrialisation,” Nogueira added.

Edward Murray, CEO of GreenIron, said the agreement with Vale “represents a clear commitment to pursue collaborative opportunities,” which aligns with the firm’s vision for a sustainable mining and metals industry.

The CEO added,  “By pooling our expertise and resources, we aim to innovate and develop projects that not only benefit both companies but also positively impact the environment and the communities in which we operate.”
