The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $10m will be funded towards a hydrogen direct reduction at a steel plant in Toledo, Ohio.
Funded via the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO), it will enable the integration of a solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) with an industrial direct reduction shaft furnace.
Led by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the project will offer an opportunity to reintegrate waste heat into hydrogen generation, which can then be reutilised to produce direct reduced iron.
