US DOE to fund solar-based hydrogen production projects

The US Department of Energy (DOE) will provide $33m to develop solar-based technologies to support the production of renewable fuels such as hydrogen.

Backed by the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America Agenda, nine projects across seven US states will receive funding to advance solar-powered hydrogen production. The fuel is expected to lower emissions from sectors including aviation, space travel, food and beverage.

The focus will be on concentrating solar-thermal (CST) systems technologies for solar fuel production and long-duration energy storage. They use mirrors to reflect and concentrate sunlight onto a receiver, helping to produce carbon-free fuels.
