US DOE awards initial funding to final two hydrogen hubs totalling $38.8m

The final two regional hydrogen hubs have received their official funding awards from the US Department of Energy (DOE), just days before President Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

The Heartland Hydrogen Hub has secured the first $20m of the $925m it was allocated in 2023, while the Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub (MACH2) was awarded $18.8m of the total $750m. The announcement came on January 17.

MACH2, located in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey, plans to produce green hydrogen for industrial applications and heavy-duty transportation, with several refuelling locations planned to serve trucks and fuel cell electric buses.

The University of North Dakota Energy and Environmental Research Centre (EERC) is leading the development of the Heartland Hydrogen Hub, which will cover projects in Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Colorado, Montana and Wisconsin.

However, last August Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) announced its withdrawal from the Prairie Horizon Hydrogen project, a key part of the Heartland Hydrogen Hub.

The hub was one of seven hydrogen hubs selected for up to $7bn in funding by the DOE in 2023, designed to demonstrate clean hydrogen production at scale.

The seven winners will receive between $400m and $1.2bn of federal funds. Furthermore, they are expected to produce a collective three million tonnes of hydrogen annually.

The Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen (MachH2) and the HyVelocity hydrogen hubs were the two previous initiatives to secure government funding, awarded $22.5m and $22m, respectively.
