Port Houston and Linde have been awarded nearly $25m to build and operate a heavy-duty hydrogen refuelling station in the Texan port.
The Department of Transport (DOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) granted the funding to the Port of Houston Authority, as part of a collaboration with Linde and other players.
The Bayport HRS project plans to offer high fuelling throughout with “convenient and publicly accessible fuelling options.”
Linde will be responsible for the station’s design, construction, ownership and operation.
Although details have not been revealed about the station’s potential capacity, the partners believe it will support the port’s Net Zero by 2050 plans.
“This project exemplifies Port Houston ‘walking the talk’ of sustainability and Net Zero,” said Port Houston Chief Infrastructure Officer, Rich Byrnes.
However, it could also help support national plans for zero-emission trucking, with the collaboration hoping to inform the US National Blueprint for Transport Decarbonization, the National Zero-Emission Corridor Strategy and US National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap.
Other partners in the Bayport HRS project include GTI Energy, Argonne National Laboratory and Center for Houston’s Future.
“The Bayport HRS project demonstrates how collaboration and innovative infrastructure can accelerate hydrogen’s integration into a low-cost, low-carbon future,” said Kristine Wiley, Vice-President, Low Carbon Energy Solutions at GTI Energy.
A December 2024 report said Texas need only make minor adjustments to its regulatory framework to capitalise on low-carbon hydrogen, thanks to its legacy of producing and using unabated fossil-based hydrogen.
