University of Nottingham to launch hydrogen propulsion lab in 2026

The University of Nottingham’s new hydrogen propulsion lab plans have been approved and funded by the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF) and industry partners.

Located at its Jubilee Campus, the lab will research high-power testing of propulsion systems for the transport industry. It will be connected to the “megawatt-class” testing facilities and “world-leading” researchers of the adjacent Power Electronics and Machines Centre (PEMC).

It will feature cryogenic test capabilities and environmental chambers suitable for altitude testing while enabling the testing of gaseous hydrogen, ammonia and other green fuels.

The facility is expected to be operational by mid-2026. H2 View reported last year that up to £70m ($88m) was secured via Research England’s UKRPIF and industry co-investment.

“A new hydrogen lab for the East Midlands is a leap forward in establishing the region’s leadership in zero carbon innovation on the world stage,” explained Professor Chris Gerada, Professor of Electrical Machines and Lead for Strategic Research and Innovation Initiatives at the university.

“It is the region that has the right place, the right people and the right technologies that industries need to achieve their decarbonisation ambitions.”

The PEMC is currently undergoing the Hy2FlyGHT initiative, which will see a 2MW aviation system developed for larger sustainable aircraft.

The programme will use the new hydrogen propulsion lab once it becomes operational next year.
