‘UK’s first’ refinery-based hydrogen furnace to be operational next year

Essar Oil UK will develop what it says will be the UK’s first refinery-based hydrogen furnace as part of a £45m ($61m) investment that will see the company’s Stanlow site showcase the benefits of using hydrogen as a fuel source.

The energy company already has its timeline in place, having today (Feb 9) confirmed that the furnace will be installed this year (2022) and become fully operational from 2023. From 2026 onwards, the site will be fuelled entirely by hydrogen produced at Stanlow as party of the HyNet North West decarbonisation cluster.

A landmark development for the North West of the UK, the HyNet North West decarbonisation cluster will see one of the UK’s most advanced hydrogen and carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS) projects come to fruition as an essential part of the UK Government’s 10-point-point for a green industrial revolution.
