UK music festival to introduce stage powered entirely by hydrogen

A UK music festival will feature a new stage powered entirely by hydrogen fuel cells in 2025.

Boomtown, which is set to take place in Hampshire on August 6-10, has said the HYDRO stage will form a key part of the 2025 event.

The festival, which expects to attract over 65,000 attendees, has partnered with Hydrologiq to pull off the feat of delivering the clean-powered stage by using the firm’s HydrologiqOS platform.

The stage will use hydrogen fuel cell generators to provide its power, with Hydrologiq managing the installation, remotely monitoring fuel levels and organising compliant operations on the ground.

Luke Mitchell, the festival’s co-founder and creative director, said he was “unbelievably happy” to launch the stage.

“It’s been a real challenge to make this work, but unless we take these big leaps and think creatively, we won’t see the shift that’s so urgently needed,” Mitchell added.

“My hope is that this sparks momentum in the right direction – paving the way for temporary events to move towards a truly Net Zero future.”

It builds off a 2022 deployment of a single 100kVa EODev fuel cell generator, which powered Boomtown’s public transport hub.

“In 2025, it’s fantastic to see Boomtown put hydrogen right at the centre of the city, powering a mainstage,” Benjamin Lindley, co-founder and COO of Hydrologiq said.
