The National Audit Office (NAO) has found that heat pump installations up to 2023 were less than half of the planned projections, potentially due to the uncertainty of hydrogen heating.
The UK Government targeted 600,000 heat pumps installed per year by 2028, however just 18,900 were installed between May 2022 and December 2023 as part of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
The Decarbonising Home Heating report recommends the UK Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) should provide more certainty on the role of hydrogen in home heating before 2026. It states that currently, the department has no long-term plan to address the low level of awareness among households in decarbonising heating.
