A trial study carried out by National Gas has found that the UK’s national gas network is ready to handle hydrogen blends up to 100%.
Over the past year, blends of hydrogen were tested at 2%, 5%, 20% and 100% at the FutureGrid facility in Cumbria, as part of the HyNTS programme. The trial examined hydrogen in previously operational assets from the National Transmission Network (NTS).
Split into two parts – standalone hydrogen tests and offline hydrogen test facility – the project found “no major findings in differences in terms of how the assets interact with hydrogen.” The only hydrogen leaks reported from the assets also occurred with natural gas.
