The UK is to delay the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars to 2035 in a move designed to be ‘pragmatic’ for household budgets – but has placed the government at loggerheads with industry and issues a potential blow to the country’s clean energy momentum.
UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, on Wednesday (September 20) announced he would push some climate measures further down the road as he vowed to deliver a more “pragmatic, proportionate and realistic approach to meeting Net Zero.”
The ban on selling new petrol and diesel cars in the UK will be pushed back from 2030 to 2035, and the timeline for replacing gas boilers is being relax with a boiler scrappage grant being increased.
