Turkish bus OEM plans to launch Toyota hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle in 2025

Turkish bus manufacturer Karsan plans to launch a hydrogen fuel cell bus in 2025, using Toyota’s fuel cell modules under a new cooperation.

Having announced plans to add the e-ATA Hydrogen to its bus lineup in 2022, the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), now plans to use Toyota’s latest generation 85kW fuel cell modules.

Planned to be a 12-metre low-floor bus, Karsan said the hydrogen offering would use a 1,560-litre tank to offer over 500km of range, with the capacity to carry 95 passengers.

Originally intended to use a 70kW fuel cell, in combination with a 30kWh battery, the OEM said the bus would boast 250kW of power and 22,000Nm of torque.

However, Karsan now looks to use Toyota’s hydrogen technology to bolster its developments. Assembled at its Belgian site in Zaventem, the fuel cells have been used across various mobility use cases,

“Owing to this robust cooperation, we are taking our claim in the field of hydrogen even further by getting strength from Japanese technology,” said Karsan CEO, Okan Baş.

The Turkish firm, which launched 58 years ago, in 2018 launched its venture into clean mobility with battery-electric vehicles, primarily supplying the buses to European markets.

Thiebault Paquet, Vice-President of Toyota Hydrogen Factory Europe, said, “We strongly believe that hydrogen will play a crucial role in future decarbonisation of public transport.

“That’s why we are more than happy to extend our cooperation and supply Karsan with our fuel cell modules, together working towards a hydrogen society.”
