Turkish manufacturing firm ENKA has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by Essar Energy Transition (EET) Hydrogen for its hydrogen production plant in Cheshire, UK.
EET Hydrogen’s HPP1 project, located at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, will reportedly have a production capacity of 350MW and capture around 600,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
As a global engineering and construction firm, the Istanbul-based ENKA has constructed some of the UK’s flagship industrial projects, such as Hinkley Point Power Plant in Somerset and Shotton Mill Paper Mill Factory in Flintshire.
“We bring expertise, engineered solutions and a commitment to excellence to every project we undertake,” claimed Hakan Kozan, Member of the Executive Committee at ENKA.
“This project reinforces our commitment to supporting the HyNet Cluster’s mission of reducing emissions and fostering sustainable economic growth,” Kozan added.
As key contributors to the HyNet Cluster, HPP1 and EET Hydrogen are advancing the goal of establishing 4GW of low-carbon hydrogen production, supporting industrial businesses across the North West of England in their drive for decarbonisation and economic growth.
Joe Seifert, CEO of EET Hydrogen, commented, “Having been awarded over 580 contracts in 57 countries, ENKA has an excellent track record in delivering complex projects like HPP1.”
The company entered into final negotiations with the UK’s Department of Energy Security and Net Zero last February. However, the project has encountered delays.

Initially scheduled to begin construction in 2024, with hydrogen production expected by 2027, both milestones have been postponed by one year. Construction is now set to commence this year, with production starting in 2028.
