Toyota Motor Corporation has announced its third-generation fuel cell, which reportedly has twice the durability and improved fuel efficiency over its predecessor.
The versatile 3rd Gen FC System is designed for use in road, rail, marine, and stationary applications, offering up to 20% greater travel distance per kilogram of hydrogen (1.2x improved fuel efficiency) compared to the previous generation.
Additionally, the Japanese car manufacturer has stated the fuel cell offers “a level of durability comparable to diesel engines and high power.” They’ve said it’s up to two times more durable and compact than the existing model.

Furthermore, Toyota introduced innovations in cell design and manufacturing processes to bring down costs.
Scheduled for its debut in Japan on February 19, 2025, the fuel cell is anticipated to enter commercial production between 2026 and 2027.
Toyota’s online statement read, “The new system features significant improvements in performance, including fuel efficiency and a significant reduction in costs compared to the prior version.
“In addition to passenger vehicles, the 3rd Gen FC System will be expanded for use in heavy-duty commercial vehicles and is planned for introduction in markets mainly in Japan, Europe, North America, and China after 2026 at the earliest.”

Since 2014, the company has sold approximately 28,000 units of its Toyota MIRAI fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV).
