TE H2 has signed a Preliminary Contract for Land Reservation with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and A.P. Møller Capital for a 1GW hydrogen production project in Morocco.
Together with the Danish firms, the TotalEnergies and EREN Group joint venture (TE H2) plan to launch pre–Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) studies on the Chbika project, which is expected to produce 200,000 tonnes per year of green ammonia for the European market.
The initiative will build 1GW of onshore solar and wind capacities to power green hydrogen production through desalinated seawater-based electrolysis. H2 View understands the project represents the first phase of a “world-scale green hydrogen production hub.”
TE H2 and CIP have stated they will be responsible for the development of renewable energy production, while A.P. Møller Capital will develop the port and associated infrastructure.
“Thanks to its geographical proximity and the quality of its wind and solar resources, Morocco indeed has the best assets to become a major partner for Europe in achieving the goals of the Green Deal,” explained Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.
David Corchia, CEO of TE H2, added, “The signing of this Preliminary Contract for Land Reservation is a decisive first step for the launch of our investment program in Morocco.
“The Kingdom has the potential to supply affordable and clean energy to Europe while serving its own decarbonised industrial development.”
TE H2 was formed earlier this year to lead the development of a hydrogen production project in Tunisia, which includes plans to produce 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
