TotalEnergies and Masdar to explore green SAF project in the UAE

TotalEnergies and Masdar will develop a commercial green hydrogen-to-methanol-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project in Abu Dhabi, the UAE.

The project is set to capture and utilise CO2 from an industrial source to be used as a feedstock, whilst green hydrogen will be produced from renewable electrolysis to therefore create green methanol and SAF.

Aviation decarbonisation is an important initiative for the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company. In December (2023), the two companies conducted a test flight to demonstrate the potential for converting methanol to SAF.

Over the past three years, Masdar has formed strategic partnerships designed to support the growth of the SAF sector. Last October (2023), the company joined forces with Boeing to develop SAF in the UAE and across the globe.
