Topsoe to supply synthesis tech for 1.1 mtpa green ammonia project in India

Hygenco has selected Topsoe as a licensor for ammonia synthesis technology to convert green hydrogen to ammonia for export from its 1.1 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) project in Odisha, India.

In addition to the DynAMMO™ technology supply, Topsoe will provide engineering design hardware and catalysts for the plant at Tata Steel’s Special Economic Zone Industrial Park in Gopalpur.

The project is planned to be developed in three phases. The first phase—expected to be operational by 2027—will boast a green ammonia capacity of 750 tonnes per day.

Topsoe says its ammonia technology can easily adapt production in response to fluctuating renewable energy supplies – offering a ramp-up/down rate of “at least” 3% per minute.

Amit Bansal, co-founder and CEO of Hygenco, said, “We are excited to leverage the cutting-edge technology of a global leader like Topsoe to scale up green ammonia production effectively.”

Hygenco intends to export the plant’s output to European markets by meeting the EU’s Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) regulations.

In October the firm launched a 1.1GW renewable energy tender to secure green power for the project.

Elena Scaltritti, Chief Commerical Officer at Topsoe, said the Danish technology firm looked forward to working with Hygenco on the project.

“On a global level, we need to deploy decarbonisation at scale, and Hygenco’s project will be able to deliver a solid contribution,” she added.
